This is one my best lifelong friends. We don't get to talk much since I moved from SoFL and then he moved to PDX. Discovering this brought me great joy.
The short story referenced there is one of the oldest I've kept published on my site, and it could use a lot of work, but I just read the first bit and I'm pretty happy with my 2002 self for this line:
